Founded in 1971, the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is one of the largest and oldest museums in the United States dedicated solely to contemporary art. The museum is located in the neighborhood of Long Island City in the borough of Queens in New York City. In addition to their renowned exhibits, the museum also sponsors the prestigious International Artist Studio Program, and "a broad spectrum of education and public programs that serve our many audiences." This spectrum of programs includes the Summer Warm Up, which has taken place every summer since 1998. Featured in this event is an architectural installation awarded by juried competition, a showcasing of international disk jockeys, as well as foremost and leading works of art. Another notable fact about P.S.1, is that it is not housed in a new and current form of architecture but rather, in a refurbished schoolhouse dated 1893. It thriftily resides in the educational facilities which lend it its name, Public School 1. As such it provides a pragmatic and post-modern alternative mode of housing artworks, setting an example for Dia: Beacon and contrasting significantly with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
